: Thurs, Oct 21, 8 PM @ The Dayton Art Institute
Simon Shaheen was born the son of a composer and master oud player in northern Galilee. A Palestinian, Shaheen grew up in Israel in the village of Tarshiha. He went on to study music and literature in Haifa and Jerusalem before coming to New York to attend the Manhattan School of Music and Columbia University in 1980. On a mission to raise awareness about Arab world music in the United States, he formed his own classical music group, the Near Eastern Music Ensemble, and later the fusion group Qantara, which means "arch." Shaheen has per-formed worldwide, garnering many honors, not the least of which is the White House’s prestigious National Heri-tage Award (1994). At the invitation of the Dayton Arab American Foundation, Shaheen will spend several days in residency programs directed by the University of Dayton and Cityfolk. His concert—which will feature Qantara—is a benefit to raise scholarship funds for Arab-American students. TICKETS: $20 general admission; $15 for UD Faculty, Staff, Alumni & Cityfolk Members; $5 for UD Students. www.simonshaheen.com
